Resources & Guides

Plain-language guides for disabled veterans planning adaptive housing projects. Learn how VA grants work, what modifications are most common, and what to expect at each step.

The VA runs three adaptive housing grant programs:

  • SAH (Specially Adapted Housing): the largest grant, for veterans with the most severe service-connected disabilities who need major home modifications or new construction.
  • SHA (Special Home Adaptation): a smaller grant for specific service-connected disabilities (including certain vision loss and severe burns) used for targeted remodels.
  • HISA (Home Improvements and Structural Alterations): a medical-benefit grant processed through the VA medical center for smaller accessibility modifications.
