About AdaptHome.vet
Our Mission
AdaptHome increases independent living for disabled veterans by providing free adaptive housing cost planning and connecting them with qualified accessibility contractors.
Every veteran with a service-connected disability deserves clear, accessible information about the VA housing grants available to them and the real-world costs of the modifications they need. Too many veterans face surprise costs, rejected applications, and unqualified contractors simply because the information to plan well is scattered or locked behind paywalls.
AdaptHome is and always will be free for veterans.
Non-Profit Direction
AdaptHome is transitioning to a non-profit organization. Our 501(c)(3) application is in progress.
Moving to a non-profit structure aligns our operating model with our mission: the service stays free for veterans forever, contractors aren't charged per lead, and the organization is funded by grants, corporate sponsors, and individual donations.
We are not yet a registered 501(c)(3) and cannot currently accept tax-deductible donations. This page will be updated as our status progresses.
How We Calculate Costs
Our cost calculator uses a comprehensive methodology to provide realistic estimates:
National Baseline Costs
We start with national average costs for common adaptive modifications, sourced from industry data, contractor surveys, and published construction cost guides.
Regional Adjustments
Construction costs vary significantly by location. We apply state-specific cost multipliers based on regional labor rates, material costs, and market conditions.
Cost Ranges
We provide both low and high estimates to account for variations in project complexity, material quality, and contractor rates. This helps you plan for different scenarios.
Grant Program Matching
Based on your disability type and estimated costs, we recommend the most appropriate VA grant program (SAH, SHA, or HISA) and calculate potential out-of-pocket expenses.
Data Sources
Our estimates are based on data from multiple reputable sources:
- National construction cost databases and industry publications
- Regional labor and material cost indices
- Surveys of contractors specializing in accessible home modifications
- Official VA grant program documentation and guidelines
- State-specific building code requirements and compliance costs
We regularly update our data to reflect current market conditions and ensure the most accurate estimates possible.
Who We Are
AdaptHome was founded by Jacob Spradlin, a veteran who saw firsthand how much confusion surrounds VA adaptive housing grants — and how often good contractors and qualified veterans fail to find each other simply because the process is opaque.
We're a small founding team operating lean on purpose. Our goal isn't to be a big company — it's to make the right information and the right contractor show up at the moment a veteran needs them, for free, and to keep doing it as we transition to a 501(c)(3) non-profit.
AdaptHome is provided at no cost to veterans and their families. We are not affiliated with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and we do not take referral fees or kickbacks from contractors or any other service provider.
Advisors & Board
We are building a founding board and advisory group composed of veterans, VA-accredited claims agents, CAPS-certified contractors, and accessibility advocates.

Important Notes
This Tool Provides Estimates Only
Our calculator provides planning estimates based on typical project costs. Actual costs can vary significantly based on:
- Specific site conditions and home layout
- Local permitting and inspection requirements
- Material availability and contractor schedules
- Project complexity and customization needs
- Current market conditions in your area
Always obtain detailed quotes from licensed contractors before beginning any project.
VA Grant Eligibility
While our tool recommends which VA grant program may be appropriate based on your disability type and estimated costs, final grant eligibility and approval are determined solely by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
